Nature of Work
To provide safe bus transportation for Head Start children, assuring that each child is picked up and delivered on schedule. Cooperate with center staff to assure a smooth flow of written communication between families and Head Start sites.
Minimum of High school diploma or GED
Essential Functions
  • Be familiar with and adhere to the Head Start Program Performance Standards, State of Louisiana licensing requirements, the RCCDC written work plan, and agency's policies and procedures
  • Maintain an open, friendly, professional relationship with a ll staff and families, to include respect for culture, diversityand ethnicity.
  • Participate in annual program self-assessment and continuous quality improvement initiatives of the overall program.
Position Specific Essential Functions:
Driving & Safety
  1. Transport children to and from Head Start centers efficiently and safely.
  2. Ensure that all passengers wear seat belts or are placed in appropriate (age or weight) car seats and belted in.
  3. Ensure that any behavioral issues do not compromise the safety of any child on the bus.
  4. Ensure that each child is delivered to the care of the responsible adult upon leaving bus as indicated on the Child Release Form
  5. Ensure that no child is ever left unattended while on the bus, following all procedures put in place to prevent a child being left behind.
  6. Visually observe the health of each child on the bus and notifies Center Director of any concerns.
  7. Continuous collaboration with site staff, families, and transportation/facility manager to design efficient bus routes.
Maintenance, Supervision & Other Duties
  1. Perform a complete visual safety check of each bus driven on a daily basis, completing daily pre and post trip checklists.
  2. Keep interior of bus clean daily, and bus exterior as needed.
  3. Report any needed repairs, and deliver bus to repair site
  4. Record mileage and gas
  5. Supervision of Bus Monitor
  6. Attend any trainings or meetings as required by Transportation/Facility Manager
  7. Assist with generating In-Kind
  8. Other duties as requested
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Working knowledge of the behaviors and developmental stages of pre-school children, typically gained by working one year or more in a school or preschool setting
  • Knowledge of safety practices as they relate to pre-school children
  • Good written and oral communication skills and basic math skills
  • Ability to maintain schedules while meeting individual needs of children and families
Employees within this classification are required to:
  • Pass a criminal background check.
  • Pass a physical examination and Complete Tuberculosis (TB) test every three years.
  • Maintain a current First Aid and CPR certification ( training provided )
  • Must possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with "P", "S", and Air Break Endorsement
  • Driving record free of any moving violations within the last three (3) years.
  • Must be able to drive up to 4 hours per day, but may be required to drive more than 4 hours in a given day.
  • Physical capability, strength and coordination adequate to drive a 20 and up passenger bus.
  • Ability to visually assess the health and behaviors of children
  • Intermediate level decisions needed to adhere to safety and scheduling considerations
  • Occasional lifting of up to 50lbs, typically placing children into seats and ability to carry or drag a child in an emergency situation out of the bus to a safe area.
  • Frequent bending at neck, frequent bending at waist and knees and occasional squatting
  • Occasional climbing to enter and exit bus
  • Daily sitting about 85% of driving time.
  • Be able to perform duties in an active environment with changes in climate and noise level.
